How to Test PPF Quality: Puncture, Hydrophobic, Stretch

Anyone can call a film premium on a spec sheet. The bench does not lie. If you want to know whether a PPF is worth putting on a customer's car, put it through three tests before you commit to a roll. We build the gear for all three, because we test our own film the same way.

Puncture. This test predicts road damage. A weak film tears when a stone kicks up at highway speed; a good TPU takes the hit and holds. Our puncture tester drives a standard probe into the film and reads the force it takes to break through. Test your current roll, test the one you are thinking of switching to, and compare the numbers instead of the sales pitch. A film that punctures easy on the bench punctures easy on the freeway.

Hydrophobic. The topcoat is what your customer sees for the next five years. Drop water on a fresh film and watch the bead. A high contact angle means water rolls off and takes dirt with it, so the car stays cleaner and the surface sheds grime. Our hydrophobic tester measures the contact angle instead of leaving you to guess from a phone video. Watch how the bead holds up after a few hundred wipes too, because a topcoat that quits early is a warranty problem waiting to happen.

Stretch. PPF lives or dies on how it moves around a bumper. Our stretch tester pulls the film to a set elongation and shows you how it recovers. You are checking two things. How far it goes before it thins or whitens, and whether it springs back or stays deformed. Film that stretches clean and recovers is film that will not lift at a curved edge next month.
