New installers underorder vinyl. It's the most common rookie mistake we see, and it kills jobs halfway through when the second roll doesn't match the first batch. Use the real math by vehicle size before you cut.
Most cast wrap film comes on 5-foot (1.52m) wide rolls. You buy by length. As a working rule, a compact car takes about 50 feet (15m). A mid-size sedan runs 55 to 60 feet. A full-size sedan or a small crossover needs around 65 feet. Move up to a full SUV, a pickup, or a van and you're looking at 75 to 90 feet, more if it's a long-bed truck.
Those numbers already bake in a waste factor, and you need one. Wrapping isn't cutting a flat sheet. You lose film to bumpers, mirrors, door handles, recessed panels, and every mistake a squeegee makes. Complex body lines eat material. So do design finishes like chrome and color-shift, where you can't flip a piece around because the flake direction has to run the same way on every panel. On those, add ten to twenty percent on top.
Two more things drive the count up. First, coverage. A full wrap needs far more than a roof-and-hood accent job, obviously, but partial wraps still waste film on setup and trim. Second, do-overs. A newer installer will botch a panel or two and re-cut. Order for that reality, not for a perfect run.
Our advice to shops: buy the next size up and keep the offcuts. Leftover film covers mirror caps, door cups, and warranty touch-ups, and it means the whole car came from one batch, so the color matches corner to corner. Running short and reordering is how you end up with two slightly different blacks on the same car.
When you quote a customer, price the film generously and you'll rarely lose money on material.
We sell wrap film factory-direct by the roll and ship worldwide. Vinyl doesn't come with free samples, but tell us the vehicle and finish and we'll send the color range, specs and photos with a wholesale quote. Start at /pages/wholesale-free-sample.
FAQ
How much vinyl do I need to wrap a car?
Roughly 50 feet for a compact, 55 to 60 for a mid-size sedan, 65 for a small crossover, and 75 to 90 feet for a full SUV, truck, or van. Rolls are typically 5 feet wide.
How much extra should I order for waste?
Plan for the waste that's already in those figures, then add ten to twenty percent for chrome, color-shift, or complex body lines where you can't reuse offcuts.
Why buy more film than the car needs?
To keep the whole job on one production batch so colors match, and to have offcuts for mirror caps, handles, and future touch-ups. Reordering risks a batch mismatch.
