We get this question every week from shops starting out, so let's settle it. PPF and ceramic coating are not rivals. They do different jobs, and the best cars we see wear both.
Paint protection film is a physical layer. It's a real TPU sheet, roughly 8 mils thick, laid over the paint. That thickness is what takes a rock hit, a shopping cart, a stray key. Our film is built on Lubrizol, BASF and Covestro TPU with a self-healing topcoat, so light swirls and wash marks pull out with heat from the sun or a warm towel. It is the only product on a car that actually absorbs impact.
Ceramic coating is chemistry, not thickness. It's a thin cured layer, measured in microns, that bonds to whatever it sits on. It gives you a slick surface. Water sheets off, bugs and bird droppings wipe away easier, and the paint holds a deeper gloss for years. It does not stop a rock. A coating over bare paint still chips.
Tell customers this: film handles impact and abrasion. Coating handles the chemistry, the water sheeting, and the deep gloss that keeps a car looking wet years after it left the lot. Put the coating on top of the film and you get self-healing PPF that also beads water and cleans up fast. That combo is what most detail shops charge premium money for, and it's an easy upsell once a customer understands the two aren't the same purchase.
One honest caveat. You do not need to coat every panel you film. Our topcoat already resists staining and yellowing, with a 5 to 10 year no-yellowing warranty depending on the line, so a coating on top is a comfort and gloss play rather than a rescue for weak film. If the film is bad, no coating saves it. Every cheap roll is a bet against your own reputation.
Sell the pair. Film first, coating second. Your customer keeps their paint, and you book two services instead of one.

FAQ
Is PPF better than ceramic coating?
Neither is "better," they solve different problems. PPF is a thick film that stops rock chips and abrasion. Ceramic coating is a thin layer that adds water beading, gloss and easier cleaning. Most premium jobs use both, coating applied over the film.
Can you put ceramic coating over PPF?
Yes, and we recommend it. Coating on top of PPF gives you self-healing impact protection plus a slick, hydrophobic surface that cleans up faster. Just make sure the film is cured first.
Does ceramic coating stop rock chips?
No. Ceramic coating is only microns thick and offers no impact protection. Only PPF absorbs rock strikes. If chip protection is the goal, the customer needs film, not just coating.
