We make the film, and we still hear the same install complaints come back to us. Nine times out of ten the roll was fine. The install got rushed. These are the mistakes we see most, and how clean shops avoid them.

Skipping the deep clean. A panel that looks clean under shop lights is still covered in bonded contaminants. Wash, clay, then wipe with an IPA solution before a single piece of film touches paint. Dust trapped under PPF shows as a bump forever, and no amount of squeegee pressure hides it.

Wrong slip and tack solution. Too much soap and the film slides for hours and never grabs. Too little and you cannot position it. Mix your slip and tack to the ratio the film likes, not the ratio you used on last year's brand. Ours has its own sweet spot, and we will tell you what it is.

Fighting the stretch. TPU wants to be warmed, not yanked. Cold film forced over a bumper corner pulls back and lifts at the edge within a week. Heat it, ease it into the curve, and let the memory relax before you lock the edge down. Patience on a mirror or a fender lip is what separates a two-year install from a two-week callback.

Wrapping edges you should have tucked, and tucking edges you should have wrapped. Know which is which for the panel in front of you. A tucked edge on a smooth return lasts. A wrapped edge on a sharp lip peels. Read the panel before the blade comes out.

Blade on paint. Never trim against the clear coat. One score line and you have turned a protection job into a respray bill. Pre-cut with software, trim off the car, or use a knifeless method.

Rushing the cure. Fresh film needs time before the car sees rain, a wash, or a hot night in a closed garage. Tell the customer to leave it alone for a few days. Most edge-lift callbacks are just film that got disturbed before it set.

Good film gives you room to work, but it does not install itself. Pair clean prep with patience and the callbacks mostly disappear.

FAQ

What is the most common PPF installation mistake?
Bad prep. A panel that looks clean still holds bonded contaminants, and dust trapped under the film shows as a permanent bump. Wash, clay, and IPA-wipe every panel before you lay film.

Why does PPF lift at the edges after a week?
Usually cold-stretched film or a disturbed cure. Warm TPU into curves instead of yanking it, and tell the customer to leave the car alone for a few days after install.

Should I wrap or tuck PPF edges?
It depends on the panel. Tuck a smooth return, but do not wrap a sharp lip because it will peel. Read the panel before trimming.
