Self-healing PPF sounds like marketing. It is not. The trick is real chemistry, and once you understand it you can spot a topcoat that works from one that only says it does.

A TPU self-healing film has an elastomeric topcoat, meaning the polymer has "memory." When a light scratch disturbs the surface, the coating is knocked out of its resting shape but not gouged through. Add heat and the polymer chains relax back to where they started, and the scratch closes. That is why a swirl mark vanishes after the car sits in the sun or gets a warm rinse. The material is not filling the scratch. It is returning to its own shape.

Heat is the switch. Most topcoats start healing with a warm hood on a summer day, a bucket of hot water, or a few passes with a heat gun on low. The warmer the surface, the faster the recovery. In cold weather healing slows down, so a scratch that would close in seconds in July might take a warm wash in January. Nothing is wrong with the film. The chemistry needs energy.

Now the honest limits. Self-healing handles light, surface-level marks: swirls, fine wash scratches, small scuffs. It does not fix a deep gouge that cuts through the topcoat, and it will not undo a rock chip that punches into the film. Anyone selling "scratch-proof" film is overselling. Self-healing keeps the surface looking new through normal use. It does not survive a key dragged with force.

Material quality decides how well and how often it heals. Cheap PVC and most TPH either heal weakly or not at all, and they stop healing early as the topcoat degrades. A film that heals once and quits is not really self-healing.
