Anyone searching for "cast or calendered film" usually wants to make a practical decision: which film can be installed cleanly, stays dimensionally stable and pays off in daily workshop use?
Two product groups are regularly mixed up here. The distinction between cast and calendered film comes primarily from PVC car wrapping films used for colour change, lettering and full wraps. With modern TPU paint protection film (PPF), layer construction, topcoat, adhesive, optical clarity and the self-healing and hydrophobic properties are decisive as well.
The manufacturing term alone is therefore not enough to assess a PPF professionally.
Cast and calendered film: the technical difference
Calendered film is rolled out from a compound between heated rollers. The material is mechanically stretched in the process and retains a tendency to shrink back. The consequence during installation: under strong elongation or on complex contours, the material can pull back later — visible at edges, in recesses and at transitions.
Cast film is produced from a liquid coating that is cast onto a carrier and dried. Because the material is not stretched, it carries less internal stress, stays more dimensionally stable and can be applied more cleanly on three-dimensional surfaces.
For PVC car wrapping, this distinction is therefore a sensible selection criterion: cast film for complex body shapes and durable full wraps, calendered film for flat surfaces and short-term applications.

For genuine stone chip protection, do not decide between "cast" and "calendered". Clarify first whether a TPU paint protection film with a suitable topcoat is being offered at all. With PPF, protective performance, surface recovery, hydrophobicity, yellowing and edge behaviour as well as the documented material warranty count for more than a single manufacturing buzzword.
For a workshop this means: do not buy the most technically impressive description, but the system that fits your installation process reproducibly.
Look at purchase price and process cost separately
The right comparison is not only "price per linear metre", but:
Material price + waste + preparation time + cutting + installation time + potential rework.
One point belongs explicitly in the evaluation: your cutting model. Shops whose calculation is built entirely on manufacturer-bound pre-cut databases shift working time into cutting when they move to freely calculated roll goods. Shops that already work with their own plotter templates, knifeless solutions or standardised manual cutting can weight material cost, tiered pricing and delivery terms more heavily.
A sample is more meaningful for this evaluation than a price list. Test the material on a realistic contour, check repositioning, squeegee behaviour, edge finish and surface appearance, and document the working time required.
Which evidence belongs in the order
Have the material series, raw material allocation, thickness, warranty and surface properties confirmed in writing. Test reports and certificates should only be used where they actually exist for the specific product and the intended market.
