One owner's Tesla service quote for an early Model Y, reported by InsideEVs, came to $1,337.85: $830 for the glass, $429 for labor and $78.85 in tax. A 2024 quote from US Auto Glass, published by TFLcar, put a 2023 Model Y at $2,532.59, with the same source listing a 2021 Model 3 at $2,443.78, a 2018 Model S at $1,773.07 and a 2020 Model X at $3,418.50. TFLcar also notes that camera recalibration can add $200 to $400 when it is billed on top. Treat all of these as single quotes, not averages. Why Tesla windshield replacement costs more than on most cars

The windshield on a Tesla is part of the driver-assist system. The forward cameras look through it from a bracket mounted on the glass, so the replacement has to be the right glass with the right optical quality in the camera area, set at the right position. After the new glass goes in, the cameras need to calibrate again before Autopilot features work as they should. That calibration step, plus the cost of OEM or OEM-equivalent glass, is most of the gap between a Tesla and an ordinary sedan.

What changes the price

Can a chip be repaired instead?

Often, yes, if it is small, not spreading and outside the driver's direct line of sight and the camera area. Once a crack starts running, or the damage sits in front of the cameras, replacement is the safer call. A chip repair is cheap compared with a new windshield, so get it looked at quickly before temperature swings turn it into a crack.

How long it takes

The glass swap itself is usually a couple of hours. The adhesive needs time to cure before the car is driven, and calibration has to be finished and checked. Plan on losing the car for most of a day, sometimes longer if the shop sends it back for calibration.

Why tint and PPF shops sell windshield film

A replacement bill of $1,300 or more is the reason windshield protection film sells. It is a clear, thin film applied to the outside of the glass to take stone hits and sand pitting before the glass does. It will not stop every rock, and it has to be clear enough not to affect the cameras or the driver's view, so shops should only use film made for windshields and follow local rules on windshield film. For an owner who has already paid for one windshield, the pitch is simple: peeling off a worn film and laying a new one is a much smaller job than replacing cracked glass and calibrating the cameras again.

For a tint or PPF shop, it is also an easy add-on. The customer is already in the bay for tint or paint protection, and Tesla owners in particular have usually read about the glass price.
