Clear PPF is a sacrificial layer for stone chips and light abrasion. It is not a ceramic coating, and it is not a wrap for looks. Once you separate what each spec actually measures, the confusion mostly clears up.

Puncture resistance is about impact, not scratches. A rock at highway speed hits the film first, and a good TPU film absorbs that hit instead of transferring it straight to the clear coat. Thicker is not automatically better here. The topcoat chemistry and the base TPU formulation matter as much as the mil count on the spec sheet.

Stretch is a separate property from puncture resistance, and it is what lets a technician wrap a mirror cap or a curved bumper corner without the film splitting. TPU stretches further than PVC before it tears, which is why PPF conforms to complex panels that a vinyl film would fight the whole way.

Self-heal gets misunderstood the most. It is a topcoat reaction to heat, not sunlight specifically. Direct sun works because it warms the surface, but a heat gun or a hot water rinse does the same job faster. Light swirl marks and fine scratches soften and level out. A puncture through to the base layer will not heal, because that damage goes past the topcoat entirely.

None of these three properties substitutes for the others. A film can stretch well and still puncture easily, or resist punctures and still show swirl marks a self-healing topcoat would have erased. When you are comparing rolls for your shop, ask about all three separately instead of trusting a single headline spec.

Does PPF self-heal only in direct sunlight?
No. Sunlight works by warming the topcoat, but a heat gun or hot water does the same thing faster. What matters is heat reaching the surface, not the light source.

Is thicker PPF always more puncture resistant?
Not automatically. Topcoat chemistry and the base TPU formulation affect puncture resistance as much as the raw thickness number does.

Can a puncture through PPF heal itself?
No. Self-healing works on light surface marks in the topcoat. A puncture that reaches the base film or the paint underneath will not close up on its own.
