PPF is a thick physical film that absorbs rock chips and scratches, while ceramic coating is a thin chemical layer that adds gloss, water beading and easier cleaning. They do different jobs, so the clearest way to explain it to a customer is that one protects against impact and the other makes the surface easier to keep clean. Shops starting out ask us this all the time, and the best-kept cars we see have both.
Paint protection film is a TPU sheet laid over the paint, and most automotive PPF falls somewhere between 6 and 10 mil thick. That thickness is what takes a stone on the highway, a shopping cart or a stray key. Most HIGHCOOL gloss PPF is 7.5 mil or 8.5 mil, and our thickest, V23PRO, is 11.5 mil. The four series are named for the TPU: W (Wanhua), V (Covestro), E (BASF) and L (Lubrizol). Every series has a self-healing topcoat, so light swirls and wash marks pull out with heat from the sun or a warm towel. Among the products a detailer sells, film is the one that absorbs impact.
Ceramic coating works through chemistry. It cures into a layer measured in microns that bonds to whatever it sits on. Water sheets off, bugs and bird droppings wipe away more easily, and the paint holds a deeper gloss for years. It does not stop a rock. A coating on bare paint still chips.
At the counter, keep it to two lines. Film handles impact and abrasion. Coating handles water, contamination and gloss. Put the coating on top of the film and the customer gets self-healing protection that also beads water and cleans up fast. Most detail shops price that combination as a premium package, and it is an easy upsell once the customer sees they are two different purchases.
You do not need to coat every panel you film. A good PPF topcoat already resists staining and yellowing, and HIGHCOOL PPF carries a 5 to 10 year warranty depending on the series (W 5 years, V15 and V17 7 years, E 8 years, L 10 years), so a coating on top is about gloss and easier washing, not rescuing weak film. If the film is bad, no coating saves it, and the redo lands on your labor.
Sell the pair in that order, film first and coating second. To test the film side yourself, request free A4 PPF samples (you pay shipping) on our wholesale and samples page, or see current rolls in the Paint Protection Film (PPF) collection.
FAQ
Is PPF better than ceramic coating?
Neither is better, because they solve different problems. PPF is a thick film that stops rock chips and abrasion, and ceramic coating is a thin layer that adds water beading, gloss and easier cleaning. Many premium jobs use both, with the coating applied over the film.
Can you put ceramic coating over PPF?
Yes, and it is a common package. Coating on top of PPF adds a slick, water-repellent surface to the film's impact protection. Let the film settle first and use a coating the maker approves for use on PPF.
Does ceramic coating stop rock chips?
No. A ceramic coating is only microns thick and offers no real impact protection. If chip protection is the goal, the customer needs film.
