Shops are adding Color PPF because customers now ask for a color change that also protects the paint, and a TPU film can do both in one layer. A vinyl wrap changes the color. A Color PPF changes the color and takes the stone chips that would otherwise go into the clear coat.

For years the choice for a new look was paint or wrap. Paint is permanent and expensive. Wrap is cheaper and reversible, but it is a thin PVC film that does little against gravel. Color PPF sits between the two, and it is the option drivers with a newer car and a lease return date tend to pick.

Which colors customers ask for

The requests that come through shops have moved away from plain black and silver. Satin and matte finishes, metallic flakes, deep greens, champagne golds and grey tones such as Nardo Grey show up far more often than they did a few years ago. Most of these customers are not after a loud look. They want a factory-looking color the dealer did not offer, and they want to be able to take it off later.

That is the useful point for a shop owner. A color change on a car worth this much is a high-ticket job, and the customer is already the kind who cares about chips on the hood.

What TPU Color PPF does that a PVC wrap does not

The base film is thermoplastic polyurethane, the same family of material used in clear paint protection film. That gives it a few practical differences from a PVC wrap:

• It is thicker. HIGHCOOL Color PPF is 7.5 mil, enough to absorb small stone hits.
• Light scratches in the topcoat level out with heat from the sun or warm water.
• It is easier to wash, because road grime and bug residue sit on the topcoat instead of in the paint.
• It comes off later without taking the paint with it, when it was installed on healthy factory paint.
• It carries a 5-year warranty, against the 2 years we give on Vinyl Wrap.

For an installer this mostly shows up as fewer callbacks. A wrap that tears on a gravel road or fades on the roof is a redo on your time. A thicker film with a protective topcoat gives you less of that.

The TPU comes from four sources by grade: Lubrizol, BASF, Covestro and Wanhua. Grades built on Lubrizol, BASF or Covestro TPU use Ashland adhesive. The Wanhua grade has its own domestic adhesive. Each roll carries its own code, so a warranty claim can be traced back to the batch.
