Matte PPF suits the Tesla Cybertruck well because the body is bare stainless steel with no clear coat, and a satin film keeps the flat factory look while it takes the fingerprints, smudges and trail scratches that would otherwise land on the metal. Tesla's own owner's manual says the exterior panels have no clear coat. A scratch on a Cybertruck is a scratch in the steel, and the fix is panel refinishing, not a quick polish.

What bare stainless steel does to owners

Fingerprints are the first complaint. Every hand on a door or the tailgate leaves a dark mark on brushed steel, and Tesla's advice for small stains is isopropyl alcohol wipes, with glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth for larger areas. The manual also warns that orange or brown spots can appear on the panels. Tesla calls that surface contamination and says the truck is not rusting. To the owner standing next to it, it still looks like rust.

The care list is strict for a work truck. Tesla says no hot water, no detergents, nothing highly alkaline or caustic, nothing above pH 13 and nothing acidic, and it does not recommend automatic car washes. Under film, the owner washes with ordinary pH-neutral car soap instead.

Why shops quote matte instead of gloss

Gloss PPF puts a wet, shiny layer over the brushed steel and changes the look of the truck. Many owners bought the truck for its raw, flat finish, and a matte or satin film stays close to it while hiding light wash marring better than gloss.

Put a sample on the truck before you quote. Satin film over brushed steel reads one way under bay lights and another way in afternoon sun, and the customer should see both before signing off.

Self-healing film for trail use

Off-road owners come back with fine scratches down the sides from branches and brush. On bare steel those stay until someone refinishes the panel. A TPU film with a self-healing topcoat takes those light scratches, and most of them close up with heat from the sun or warm water. A deep cut through the film will not heal, but then you replace one piece of film instead of refinishing a stainless panel.

Vinyl wrap is not a substitute here. It is much thinner, often in the 3 to 4 mil range, and gives little protection against stone hits or branches.

Panel size, roll width and prep

The hood and the long, flat side panels are wider than on a typical sedan. Our standard PPF roll is 60 in x 49 ft (1.52 m x 15 m), and 72-inch-wide rolls are also available, which covers more of a Cybertruck panel in one piece. Plan the layout against the roll width you actually stock before you quote, so you know where any seam or relief cut will fall and can tell the customer up front. On flat stainless panels a seam is easy to see.

Prep matters more on steel than on paint. Follow Tesla's cleaning guidance, remove any orange spotting first, and wipe the panels with isopropyl alcohol before the film goes down. Film laid over contamination will show it for the life of the install.

Can PPF go straight onto Cybertruck stainless steel?
Yes, PPF bonds to clean bare stainless steel the same way it bonds to painted panels. The steel has to be fully decontaminated first, including any orange surface spotting, and wiped with isopropyl alcohol. Test a small piece on a hidden area before you film the whole truck.

Is matte PPF harder to clean than the bare steel?
No, in daily use it is easier, because the owner washes the film with pH-neutral car soap instead of following the stainless care rules. Matte film should not get wax or polish with fillers, since they can leave shiny patches. Give the customer a short care sheet at handover.

How long does matte PPF last on a Cybertruck?
