A window tint percentage normally refers to visible light transmission, or VLT. Lower VLT means less visible light passes through the tested film-and-glass arrangement. When comparing 20%, 30%, 35%, 50% or 70% tint, first ask whether the number is a product label, a film-only measurement or a result on specified glass.

Film VLT versus the result on glass
Glass already affects light transmission. A film's nominal shade does not automatically equal the finished window measurement. As an approximate illustration, 80%-transmitting glass combined with a film that transmits 35% gives 0.80 × 0.35 = 0.28, or about 28% transmission. This simplified calculation is not a compliance measurement; use the correct meter and procedure for the installed window.
Manufacturer technical sheets may report properties on a specified reference glass. For example, 3M's Ceramic IM sheet identifies its glazing basis. That example explains how to read a table; it is not HIGHCOOL product data.
20% versus 35% versus 50% versus 70%
Under comparable conditions, the higher VLT option passes more visible light. Appearance also changes with glass, interior color, lighting and viewing angle. A photograph alone cannot establish the VLT or guarantee visibility at night. Test shortlisted samples and consider the actual driving conditions.
There is no universal best percentage for every vehicle. Compare the window position, existing glass, visibility requirements and local restrictions. A high-VLT product is not automatically permitted on a windshield, and a lower-VLT product is not automatically suitable for rear glass in every market.
30% and 35% are different specifications
If a customer requests 35% and a supplier offers 30%, present it as an alternative for review, not the same shade under a new name. Ask for the measured value, reference glass and tolerances for the offered model. Confirm acceptance before placing an order.
Does darker tint block more heat?
VLT describes visible light transmission. It is not a complete measure of solar heat performance. Compare TSER, the infrared measurement basis and the other properties for the exact models. Our window-tint types guide explains why category labels are also insufficient.
Check local requirements before installation
Confirm current official requirements for the destination and each window position, including any measurement procedure or permitted exceptions. This guide does not publish universal legal limits. Ask the installer to verify the finished window rather than treating the film label as proof of compliance.

- Exact model data, glass basis and sample dimensions needed for testing.
